¿ Why do we "Blame the goats" ?  The Story Behind Our Most Iconic Merch 🐐☕

If you’ve ever visited La Bohème Café, there’s a good chance you’ve seen our merch with the phrase: “Blame it on the goats”. And if not in our cafés, then maybe at a coffee festival, cupping, or competition - where this slogan usually gets a mix of laughs, confused looks, and a lot of questions. Is it just a random joke?Well… kind of. But also not at all.

Why are goats responsible for coffee?

Behind this phrase stands one of the most famous legends in coffee history. According to an old Ethiopian story, a goat herder named Kaldi noticed one evening that his goats were acting strangely energetic. Instead of resting after a long day, they were running around, jumping, and almost “dancing” near a bush covered in bright red cherries. Curious, Kaldi tried the cherries himself - and suddenly felt the same burst of energy and alertness. He later brought the fruit to a nearby monastery, where the monks initially didn’t trust him and supposedly threw the cherries into the fire. But then something unexpected happened. A beautiful aroma started filling the room. The monks pulled the roasted beans from the embers, poured hot water over them… and according to legend, the very first cup of coffee was born.

Is the story true? Honestly? Nobody really knows. Historians still debate whether the story of Kaldi is fact or simply a legend passed down through generations. But let’s be honest - coffee could hardly ask for a better origin story. And that’s exactly why we love it.

How our “It’s all the goats’ fault” merch was born?

At first, it was just an internal joke. One of those phrases that somehow starts living its own life among coffee people. But the more we used it, the more we realized it perfectly captures the spirit of specialty coffee:

  • a little obsessive
  • a little chaotic
  • full of energy
  • and filled with people who take coffee seriously… but not themselves

So eventually, the merch was born. Part legend. Part humor. And a whole lot of love for coffee.

In specialty coffee, we often talk about fermentation, varieties, processing methods, terroir, and scores. But sometimes it’s good to remember that coffee is also about joy, shared moments, and stories that connect people across the world. And if goats really are responsible for all of it? Honestly… we’re okay with that 🐐☕
